Sedation Relax and let us take care of your smile!
We frequently meet people with a dental phobia. Many are so scared about going to the dentist that even the thought of it makes their entire body tense up, and they are prepared to go without vital treatment. If you sometimes feel like this, you're not alone – and the great news is that we can help you. Under appropriate circumstances our sedation service can be used to help take away some of your anxiety, by using sedative medication to help you relax during dental procedures. The decision to use sedation will be made only after all options have been considered and it has been deemed in your best interests after weighing up your individual risks and benefits. Sedation dentistry is most appropriate for people who have a genuine fear or anxiety that prevents them from going to the dentist.
We offer a number of different levels of sedation, based on each patient’s individual needs:
Intravenous sedation
For minimal, moderate or deep sedation, the sedative is administered directly into a vein. The combination of pain relieving and sedative medicaments create a dream-like state of deep relaxation for the whole duration of the dental procedure. You remain conscious throughout, but may have limited recollection afterwards. You'll also need a local anaesthetic – numbing medication within your mouth to help relieve any pain or discomfort.
General anaesthesia
Provided in a hospital setting, this allows you to be unconscious and completely unaware of your treatment. We admit most people as day only patients and usually discharge them within 2 hours of their procedure. The use of general anesthesia is always a last resort; in itself it poses risks.
